About the Item

This is an old Japanese cabinet. It was used in the Tohoku region around the Meiji period and is primarily made of cedar. It is lightweight and easy to handle. It has a simple design and a striking presence, characterized by its finely spaced horizontal bars. It looks great as a sideboard, displaying vases and ceramics. The overall surface has turned a natural black due to soot, giving it a natural appearance that cannot be achieved with paint. The front sliding door has a slight sheen and a reddish-black color. This has also been finished to preserve its natural appearance. There is some chipping and wear under the left sliding door due to aging, but this does not affect its use. The internal shelves are removable. This cabinet has been carefully used by hand over the years, and its appearance has gradually changed over time. It has now been completed as a work of art in harmony with nature, and is extremely valuable. This item can change the impression of a large, inorganic space simply by creating some white space and placing it in it. Weight: 38kg

Japanese Antique Tansu 1860s-1900s / Sideboard Wabi Sabi #02
Located in Sammu-shi, Chiba
This is a historically significant Japanese Tansu cabinet, crafted from cedar wood during the Meiji period (1860s–1900s). Its minimalist and refined design embodies traditional Japanese aesthetics, bringing a sense of understated elegance and serene presence to any interior. Over time, the cedar wood has developed a warm, rich patina, enhancing the cabinet’s unique character and depth. A distinctive feature of this piece is the lattice at the upper back, designed to provide ventilation. The sliding doors operate smoothly, and the piece has been carefully cleaned and disinfected, ready for immediate use. Its condition is excellent considering its age. This Tansu reflects the philosophy of *wabi-sabi*, finding beauty in imperfection and impermanence. Its understated elegance contrasts with conventional opulence, making it a rare and distinctive work of craftsmanship. Additionally, this cabinet can be paired and stacked with the Japanese Antique Tansu...
