Jugendstil Cabinet by Alfred Johann Altherr sen., around 1905

About the Item

Crafted around 1905 by Swiss designer Alfred Johann Altherr senior, this Jugendstil cabinet stands as a remarkable expression of Berlin Art Nouveau. With its refined proportions, rich materials, and clear attention to detail, it exemplifies the artistic sensibility that shaped interiors at the turn of the century. Altherr, a key figure in the early Swiss Werkbund and a prominent educator in both Berlin and Zurich, was deeply involved in defining the aesthetic values of his time. This cabinet—featured in contemporary publications such as Hermann Muthesius’ *Landhaus und Garten* (1907)—is more than a piece of furniture; it’s a direct link to that formative period of modern design. The structure combines solid elm and fine elm veneer over a softwood frame, finished with a transparent varnish that enhances the natural beauty of the grain. The upper doors, each with six glass panes bordered by a decorative band, introduce a delicate rhythm to the piece. Below, a pair of doors with cross-joined veneer patterns adds a subtle but striking geometric contrast. Original brass fittings and a drawer with integrated lock complete the design, all carefully preserved in original condition. Likely produced by the Berlin-based J.C. Pfaff furniture factory—frequent collaborators of Altherr—this cabinet reveals the intersection of craft, innovation, and visual clarity that defines Jugendstil at its best. It's a statement of early 20th-century artistry, both grounded in tradition and reaching toward modern ideals.
