Chubb Safe Co.
Chubb was founded by brothers Charles and Jeremiah Chubb, who began their careers as ironmongers in Portsmouth, England. In 1818, Jeremiah Chubb invented and patented the revolutionary Chubb Detector Lock, which was designed to detect tampering attempts and render itself inoperable if someone tried to pick it. This invention, created in response to a government competition for an un-pickable lock, remained secure until the Great Exhibition of 1851.
The Chubb business moved to Wolverhampton in 1820, establishing its first factory in the heart of England’s lock-making industry. By 1823, the company had gained royal recognition, becoming a supplier of locks to the Post Office and HM Prison Service. In 1827, Chubb opened its first London premises at 57 St Paul’s Churchyard, remaining there for 50 years before relocating to 128 Queen Victoria Street in 1877.
In 1835, Chubb produced its first burglar-resistant safe, combining its expertise in locks with advances in security technology. The company also created fireproof safes in 1838, further cementing its status as a leader in security innovation.
The company's reputation attracted prestigious clients, including the Duke of Wellington and the Bank of England, and by the mid-19th century, Chubb's safes were in high demand internationally.
During both World Wars, Chubb contributed to the war effort diverting manufacturing to the production of arms. The company’s legacy of producing high-security safes and locks continues today.
