The Marfa Bar by MICHAEL HILAL. In an ode to the artist Donald Judd, whose reductionist forms alluded only to their own physical presence, Hilal crafted the floating, minimal Marfa bar and record player.
With its metallic geometry, the bar creates a cool sensory counterpoint and nostalgic twinge. The vibe is inviting, relaxed, effortless.
Handmade in California, the Maria Bar is made from aluminium and acrylic. When lit from above, the shelf surface projects a rectangle of colour along the wall.
MICHAEL HILAL, a San Francisco-based designer, creates spaces inspired by the ease of living and sun-kissed imperfection of his home state of California. His practice lies at the intersection of interiors, objects, art and fashion and is a nexus for collaboration for makers across diverse creative fields. Subverting the concept of formality in design, Hilal’s spaces are bespoke and put-together, but approachable. He excels at crafting interiors that are distinctive for each client, yet share a common thread—they are relaxing, inviting and effortless.

The Big Sur sofa by MICHAEL HILAL, which he describes “a love letter to California”. The varied topography of Hilal’s home state from mountains to rugged shoreline is the starting point for Big Sur’s shifting interplay of organic shapes. Configurations engage and form spaces for hanging out, catnapping, toasting cocktails or telling secrets.
Conceived of as a room’s center-of-gravity, rather than a wallflower, the sofa transforms into a natural gathering place. The ease of California living, a signature concept in Hilal’s work, is reflected in the casual configurations and reconfigurations.
The Collection includes two sofa configurations:
BIG SUR 1.1 – A modern, sculptural take on a tête-à-tête, this sofa floats away from the wall, offering all sides for lounging and conversation. The single main component is doubled up and features two satellite stools.
