Mid-19th Century Napoleon III Gilt Bronze Mounted Boulle Style Cabinet & Mirror

About the Item

A mid-late 19th century monumental Napoleon III gilt bronze mounted ebony, red tortoiseshell and designed brass Boulle style cabinet and mirror Each Boulle style marquetry panel with designs in the manner of Jean Bérain, the cabinet surmounted by an arched mirror with cherubs and fitted with three doors. In the manner of the 18th century cabinetmaker, André Charles Boulle. André-Charles Boulle (11 November 1642-28 February 1732) was the French cabinetmaker who is generally considered to be the preeminent artist in the field of marquetry, even “the most remarkable of all French cabinetmakers. His fame in marquetry led to his name being given to the fashion he perfected of inlaying brass and tortoiseshell, known as Boulle. André-Charles Boulle, the son of Jean Boulle (originally called Johan Bolt) was of German origin, being born in the Duchy of Guelders. André-Charles became the most famous of his family. Boulle’s skill and reputation must have begun at a comparatively early age; by age 30 he had already been granted one of those lodgings in the galleries of the Louvre which Henri IV had set apart for the use of the most favored among the artists employed by the crown. To be admitted to these galleries not only signified a mark of special royal favor, but gave the important privilege of freedom from the trammels of the trade guilds. In 1672 Louis XIV gave Boulle the deceased Jean Macé’s own lodging upon the recommendation of the minister of the arts, Jean-Baptiste Colbert, who described Boulle as le plus habile ébéniste de Paris; the patent conferring this privilege also describes him as a chaser, gilder and maker of marquetry. He received the post of premier ébéniste du Roi.

  • Fine 19th Century Gilt Bronze-Mounted Cabinet by Joseph Zwiener
    By Joseph-Emmanuel Zwiener
    Located in New York, NY
A very fine late 19th century gilt bronze-mounted Louis XV style Vernis Martin cabinet. By Joseph Zwiener. The central section finely decorated door panel displaying an allegorical 'Vernis Martin' scene, within a gilt bronze banded frame. With finely cast acanthus and figurative gilt bronze mounts. Stamped ‘NZ’ for Zwiener on the back of the escutcheons and reverse of the bronze mask to the base. Born in Herdon, Germany, in 1849, Joseph Emmanuel Zwiener followed the tradition of some of the best ébnistes of the 19th century. He moved to Paris establishing a workshop at 12, rue de la Roquette, between 1880 and 1895. He produced a wide array of the very finest furniture, modelling in his own interpretations of the 18th century Louis XV Rococo style, veneered with the highest and finest quality marquetry and 'Vernis Martin' panels. Exhibiting at the Exposition Universelle, Paris, in 1889, Zwiener was awarded a Gold Medal for what the jury reported as 'dè ses dèbuts à une Exposition Universelle, [il] s'est mi au premier rang par la richesse, la hardinesse, et le fini de ses meubles incrustés de bronze et fort habilment marquetés.' Zwiener was closely associated with François Linke and the two houses produced work which, at first glance, is remarkably similar and with occasionally identical mounts. The similarities are made more likely by the fact that the brilliant sculptor, Léon Messagé, worked initially for Zwiener and subsequently, upon Zwiener's departure for Berlin to work on furniture commissioned by Freidrich Wilhelm II, he was employed in the workshop of François Linke. It appears that Zwiener, unlike Linke, did not sign all his work, although some stamped pieces with his name and/or his "Z" initial are documented. There is some uncertainty between the recorded stamp E. Zwiener and the work of a Julius Zwiener...

  • Cabinet 19th Century, Napoleon III Period, Style Boulle
    By André-Charles Boulle
    Located in Warsaw, PL
This wooden cabinet is designed in the Boulle style. This style was very popular around the time of Napoleon III. The characteristic of this style is the use of small pieces of wood in furniture, inlaid designs with many different materials: precious wood, precious stones, enamel, ivory, seashells, metal, marble etc. In addition, to express the royal style, the "Boulle" style also uses a large amount of gilded copper on the furniture, such as tiger claw decoration, mirror border decoration, leaf decoration, etc. The main elementsof this cabinet is ebony and turtle shell, with decorative details and gilded legs. This is a pretty prominent highlight in the overall black and gold color scheme. Moreover, the head of a woman is in the middle of the cabinet with waves in her hair and grape vines could be representing the Greek goddes of spring Spring. Surrounding the head are beautiful acanthus motifs incorporated in every layer and surface of the cabinet. Symmetricallly on the left and right side of the head are two identical faces, with one being the lock of the cabinet where key goes. The four corners of the cabinet have blooming carnations to create a feeling of spring coming. The details are collaged, decorated with golden bronze leaves in a classic French style. On the edges of the cabinet are sculptures of two women wrapped around with cloth and leaves. Through it, the author highlights the beauty of the woman's status in the past. On the side panels of the cabinet is placed a gilded face of a man with wings...

  • French 19th Century Napoleon III Period Cabinet
    Located in Warsaw, PL
A magnificent rectangular black 2-door cabinet in Napoleon III style. Large and small details are gilt, bringing antique and luxurious looks. Brass medallions are centrally mounted on each door and also adorn the upper facade of the cabinet. The inside of the cabinet is divided into three horizontal shelves. At the bottom of the cabinet, there is a figure of a woman's mask, decorated with floral motifs, notably acanthus leaves and it is completed on the side with a rich ornamentation of gilded bronzes caryatides. The borders running along the cabinet are all gilt and engraved with beautiful patterns. On the two cabinet doors, there are two big figures encased in an oval border, representing Apollo, the god of music, and Hermes, the messenger of the gods. Both are the son of Zeus, and they are also frequently present in mythological tales about the other. When Hermes was just a toddler, he once left his cradle to steal the cattle of his half-brother Apollo. Apollo soon discovered that his flock was missing and began to search the surrounding area. Of course, Apollo was the god of prophecy, so he soon found out about the thief and furiously went to Mount Cyllene to find Hermes in his cave. He grabbed the infant and took him to Mount Olympus, to be judged by their master Zeus, the king of the gods. In front of Zeus, Hermes initially denied everything, but in the end, he had to confess. Zeus found the story quite amusing, so he did not punish Hermes, but only required him to return the flock. Hermes regretted what he had done and offered Apollo his lyre as a gift. The lyre was a musical instrument that Hermes had created all by himself from the shell of a turtle. To repay Hermes for his kindness, Apollo returned the gesture by giving Hermes a golden staff...
