Monumental 19th Century Masonic Display Cabinet from South Dakota

PRESENTING a Monumental 19C Masonic Display Cabinet from South Dakota. A VERY RARE and HISTORIC PIECE from the State of South Dakota ! Made circa 1890-1900, this piece is monumental in size and weight. Made of solid walnut it consists of a top portion display case with 2 extra large glass doors and glass side galleries. The lower portion consists of 4 large drawers, 2 on either side. The front of the display is highlighted with 6 diamond shaped mirrors in diamond shaped moldings. For some time this piece has perplexed us. Initially we thought that the 3 larger mirrored sections would have a practical use in a haberdashery store for tying on bowties or cravats. But the 3 mirrored sections at the top seemed ‘superfluous’ and have no practical function. Then a customer with a very ‘keen eye’ noticed what appear to be Masonic Symbols/Emblems on the top sections handles. Having cleaned and examined them more closely we believe that these are, indeed, ‘Masonic” symbols/emblems. On either side of the handle there appears to be a “Masonic Compass’ emblem/symbol and a “Sunburst’ emblem, likewise associated with Freemasonry. The handles on the lower drawer section do not have such emblems/symbols but are classic early Art Nouveau in design with the heart shaped edges … fully in line with our dating of this piece. Considering the now obvious masonic connection … the 3 diamond shaped mirrors on top make sense as they resemble the most famous masonic symbol/emblem of the “All Seeing Eye”. At the back of the piece is a marking noting that it originated or came from South Dakota. Written on the back is “Union ….. Union County Investment Co …. Armour, S.D.” Union County is a County in South Dakota and Armour is a City in South Dakota. The display portion has 4 shelves positioned at different levels. We are NOW of the opinion that this piece was most likely made for and located in a Freemason Lodge (in South Dakota) for the display of Masonic items. A VERY UNUSUAL HISTORIC AND RARE SURVIVOR, WHICH SERVES A VERY PRACTICAL USE TODAY TO DISPLAY YOUR FINEST COLLECTIBLES OR BOOKS !

Condition:
Repaired: Some very minor losses and repairs (to the door closing latches) but nothing significant. The 2 central handles appear to have been moved from the bottom section of each door and placed either side of the central mirror. Wear consistent with age and use. Minor losses. Very good original condition. Some very minor losses but nothing significant.
