No. 87 "Diffuser Cabinet" by Dirk Vander Kooij

About

The “Diffuser Cabinet” appears as a freestanding sculpture, assembled of individual pieces of tulip wood that are altogether irregular. Its unique form is actually shaped by a mathematical calculation that optimizes the acoustic performance of the room that it is placed in. The natural variation of tones in the wood come represent the different tonalities of sound. Like Jenga, the playful structure is equally made up of empty slots. Moreover, parts can be pulled out to reveal hidden drawers. While the cabinet stores, the diffuser performs the opposite, spreading rather than collecting sound. For that reason, the design — its name and Dual function — is an impressive contradiction.
