About the Item

Early Classic Art Deco display cabinet/vitrine by Paul Follot, circa 1918, in original blue/black lacquer and with original gilding. This exquisite cabinet is a masterpiece of sculpting and detail in exceptional original condition. 40” wide x 18” deep x 77” high. Documented in situ. Paul Follot (1877 - 1958) Paris-born decorative artist and sculptor Paul Follot studied at Ecole Normale d'Enseignment du Dessin under Eugene Grasset. In his early graphic design work he was influenced by medieval and Pre-Raphaelite art. In 1901 he joined La Maison Moderne in Paris where he designed bronzes, jewelry and fabric. By 1904 he had become an independent artist. And by 1910 he had begun to seek des architectures calmes ('tranquil architecture') through the use of beautiful and rare materials, refined techniques and harmonious and balanced forms in what would emerge later as the Art Deco style. His work was first shown at the 1902 Salon of Societe des Artistes Francais and he showed for many years at Societe des Artistes Decorateurs, Nationale des Beaux Arts and Salon d'Automne. His illustrious career included teaching and theory, and he considered ornamentation an essential element of design and had no interest in the minimalism of Ie style 25. He rejected mass-production art in favor of the aristocratic tradition of luxury.

This cabinet is pictured in Dufrène's own Hôtel Parrticulier (private residence), at 22, rue Bayard in Paris, taken in 1918 (see photo below). The lemonwood version of this cabinet was exhibited at the Salon d’Automne in 1912 and is now on permanent display at the Musee d’Orsay in Paris (see photo below). This cabinet is in original condition and a scan of the original drawing is shown here. This shop represented an association of artists who were working together to create designs which could be produced in multiples. Dufrene's work was first shown at salons in 1902 and from 1903 he regularly exhibited at Salon d'Automne and Salons of Societe Nationale des Beaux-Arts. At the 1925 Paris Exposition Internationale des Arts Decoratifs et Industriels Modernes (which would later give the movement "Art Deco" its name), Dufrene's designs included luxury boutiques, the living room of Une Ambassade Francaise pavilion, the music salon...
