About the Item

A piece of functional art made in Shizuoka for export to the western market, this Japanese chest with drawers on stand, circa 1900s features intricate marquetry work using a traditional technique called Yosegi, which involves painstaking inlay and marquetry work to create the extremely intricate patterns. With an elegant form that took cues from traditional tansu and Art Deco, the upper part of the cabinet displayed two inlaid doors with lacquered brass hardware that open to a stack of drawers, the lower part are exposed drawers of various sizes with matching lacquered pulls. The cabinet is raised on bracket feet on a matching Stand. The extensive marquetry work is superb, and the intricacy showcases the incredible skill of the craftsmanship that is demanded for creating such a beautiful piece. On the back it is marked by the maker's name K. Sato and the location of its production Shi(d)Zuoka, Japan, both in Japanese and English. The measurement of the Cabinet: 48 H x 35.6 W x 15.5 D. The stand measures: 13.25 height x 38.5 wide x 18.3 deep.
