About the Item

A rare expression of Dutch design ingenuity, this tea cabinet by Paul Bromberg exemplifies the progressive spirit of early 20th-century interior design. Created in 1918, it features prominently on the cover of the book 'Paul Bromberg – Binnenhuisarchitect en publicist' by Monique Teunissen, underscoring its historical and aesthetic importance. Description The cabinet is crafted in oak, its surfaces gently darkened with age and carefully restored to retain the wood’s character and integrity. Its most distinctive element is the sculptural silhouette: a semi-circular back panel flaring upwards from a geometric plinth base, giving it a strong architectural presence. Glazed panels on three sides allow light to pass through, revealing a two-shelf interior suited for both display and storage. What sets this piece apart is its subtle interplay between asymmetry and balance. The trapezoidal shape of the side panels gives the impression of motion, while the curved backrest adds softness to the otherwise angular design. Elegant brass hooks at the top corners act as discreet, yet eye-catching closures Paul Bromberg, known for his refined interiors and writings on decorative arts, worked at the intersection of tradition and innovation. This cabinet speaks to his approach: functional, quietly modern, and artistically disciplined. Designed during a period of artistic transition in the Netherlands, the piece anticipates elements of the Amsterdam School and De Stijl movements, though with a more restrained and personal interpretation. An expertly restored piece that represents a pivotal moment in Dutch design history. Both sculptural and usable, the cabinet holds its own as a centrepiece or integrated storage solution. Condition This cabinet has been fully restored and presents in excellent condition. Some minor wear consistent with its age remains visible on the brass hardware and internal shelving, all in keeping with the authenticity of the piece.
