"Sobreiro" Cabinet by the Campana Brothers, Brazil 2018

About the Item

Made in limited edition of 150, this cabinet is part of the exclusive Sobreiro Collection of cork furniture designed by the Campana Brothers. The Brazilian designers brought a sculptural whimsy to the lightweight, sustainable material of cork, which is visible in the gently rounded edges and sculpted handles of this cabinet. With this Sobreiro Cabinet, the Campana brothers brought forth that multitude of textures and effects that cork can create. It is composed of cork and a wooden structure made from expanded natural cork agglomerate, a material made by heating the cork and does not contain any additive. Besides aesthetics, cork's sustainability is key to its appeal. Cork (Sobreiro is Portuguese for cork oak tree) is one of the most sustainable natural materials to harvest, most importantly because its trees never get cut down; every nine years, a tree's bark is removed and turned into everyday objects, such as wine stoppers, shoes, and now, design furniture. For the Campana Brothers cork is a wonderful medium to express their vision that aesthetics and sustainability should be inseparable in the 21st century. Made upon order: Estimated production time, ca 6-8 weeks Condition: New. ? Because this is a handmade artistic work made of a natural product, each item is one-of-a-kind and minor variations in colour, texture, shape, grain, and sizing can occur. Dimensions: 31.5 in W x 15.75 in D x 63 in H 80 cm W x 40 cm D x 160 cm H About the designer: The Campana Brothers, Humberto and Fernando, are among the icons of contemporary furniture design. Since 1983, the Brazilian siblings have achieved both national and international recognition and popularity. Their studio, Estudio Campana, is based in São Paulo, and often collaborates with local communities, factories, and industries. There is a huge emphasis on handcrafted and artisanal work. Via their pieces, the Campana Brothers institute conversation around ethical production, sustainability and social awareness into some of the world’s most alluring interiors. Their unique designs have earned them numerous awards, including the Ordre des Arts et Lettre from the Ministry of Culture in France and the Order of Cultural Merit in Brazil. Their work has been the subject of several exhibitions, including the 2008 exhibition at the Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum in New York. ~H.

  • Jorge Zalszupin Modular Shelving System for L’Atelier, Brazil, 1960s
    By Jorge Zalszupin
    Located in Utrecht, NL
This gorgeous multi-level shelving system was designed and manufactured by the Brazilian design icon, Jorge Zalszupin and his company, L’Atelier. When it comes to Zalszupin’s line of modular pieces (Modulados Compiníveis), simplicity and clarity are the main characteristics. Similarly to Danish production, treating the wood with special care was a core concept for Zalszupin. The versatile industrial design of these pieces offers a variety of typologies and combinations of modules that can be creatively combined to satisfy every need and interest. The pieces include drawers as well as diverse consoles with doors that feature locks. These modular pieces made by L’Atelier follow the idea of Louis Sullivan: “form follows functions”, which is exemplified by this piece. The modules are made of the Brazilian wood ‘caviuna’ with a beautiful finish in wood-block collage. The six wooden legs support the units in an understated way, leaving the units to be the main visual pieces. The pieces feature “inverted” handles in pairs, that are distinctive of Zalszupin, and contribute to the elegant and modern look of this shelving system. Condition: In good vintage condition. Wear consistent with age and use. Some modules have some small scratches and marks. Dimensions: 98.42 in W x 15.95 in D x 104.33 in H 250 cm W x 40.5 cm D x 265 cm H About the designer: Jorge Zalszupin was born in Warsaw, Poland, in 1922. He graduated as an architect in Romania in 1945. His importance for Brazilian design has been articulated in several publications so far. In addition to being the owner of the l'Atelier furniture factory of modern furniture, Zalszupin led a unique initiative: he coordinated a team of designers working for four different factories in the same business group, the Forsa Group. Zalszupin immigrated to Brazil in 1949 and after a brief stay in the capital, he settled in São Paulo, a city that was then entering a cycle of great industrial growth and great cultural transformations. In the first half of the 1950s, he opened an architecture office, having José Gugliota as a partner. When he got tired of designing exclusive furniture manufactured for his clients' homes, he decided to join a group of woodworkers and started to produce smaller series. This was how l'Atelier came into being, which eventually began to manufacture office furniture and went from a carpentry shop with handcrafted products to an industry with serial production. The first piece in this series was an armchair nicknamed 'Danish' by employees. It was first created in 1959. In the early 1970s, because of serious financial problems, l'Atelier was sold to a business group. The sale was finalized with Zalszupin's 'pass' as director of product research and development. Thus, Zalszupin expanded the team of designers - which already had Oswaldo Mellone - incorporating Paulo Jorge Pedreira and Lílian Weimberg permanently. The designers named the new group Forsa, and started to act as a sort of creative laboratory. The technical possibilities offered by four distinct industrial plants were enhanced by the team of designers. In this way, Hevea, which produced plastic commodities, won a very sophisticated product line in design and established a brand: Eva, for household items, sold in supermarkets. L'Atelier itself started using injected plastic, producing partition panels...

  • European Mid-Century Display Cabinet, Europe ca 1940s
    Located in Utrecht, NL
Curio or display cabinets are versatile pieces of furniture that offer a creative way to showcase its owner’s interests and style. This unique cabinet not only serves a functional purpose, but thanks to its unique characteristics, it is a charming and stylish addition to any space. A glass display cabinet can transform an entire room. A glass display cabinet gives the perfect opportunity to put a collection on display. Books, cards, figurines, art, liquor, and an infinite amount of other trinkets can be put on display in a sophisticated, stylish manner, especially in open designs such as this European cabinet. The solid wooden structure has subtle decorative elements paired with simpler solutions like the straight face frame and top. European cabinetmakers and designers created versatile and functional models from solid wood. This cabinet is an exemplary European 20th century design, with a single shelf in the middle. Dividing the space in two, the shelf makes the design perfect to display anything as the sides are made of glass. This creates a classic look, while the open front allows the most eye-catching detail to stand out: the orange velvet inlay. Delicate objects can be safely stored and displayed on the soft velvet, and visually it creates an accent that draws the eye. The lower part is equally enticing with four thin, Marlborough-reminiscent legs and carved details. The display cabinet style is designed for displaying curios, which are simply collections and treasured items. With its beautiful wood surfaces and velvet accent shelf...

  • Brazilian Wood Three-Seater Sofa by Rino Levi, Brazil 1950s
    By Rino Levi
    Located in Utrecht, NL
Rino Levi was one of the pioneers of the modern movement in Brazil, advocating for simple, practical and economical design, disparaging the imitation of classicism. ‘Classical spirit’ rather than classical forms was his ideal. Levi was instrumental in spreading the fame of Brazilian modernism through his furniture designs as well. As this beautiful Brazilian wood sofa shows, by the 1960s, Levi abandoned Italian rationalism in favour of an approach closer to that of the Rio modernists both in his architectural and furniture designs. As a piece of true Brazilian mid-century design, the beauty of the wood and organic shapes and lines dominate this three-seater sofa. The tilted, architectural lines of wood making up the armrests create a visually distinct and exciting appearance. The additional horizontal lines connecting to the backrest are a creative addition, while also supporting the overall stability. The frame with its joinery praises Rino Levi’s craftsmanship and architectural expertise. The beautiful colour of the wood is highlighted by the light upholstery of the body in a premium bouclé fabric, including the three removable cushions. This sofa model is rare to find, for as during Brazil's military dictatorship, it was against the law to export furniture. The ban on exports only ended in the 1980s, but it still took some time for things to change, not to mention that handmade pieces were created in limited editions. Therefore, it is no exaggeration to say that this sofa is special, and a real rarity. Condition: In good vintage condition. Wear consistent with age and use. Some scratches and marks on the wood. The sofa has been reupholstered recently in a premium bouclé fabric. Each of our items can be re-upholstered by our in-house atelier in a fabric of choice. Please reach out for more information. Dimensions: 86.41 in W x 28.74 in D x 30.31 in H; Seat height 16.14 in 219.5 cm W x 73 cm D x 77 cm H; Seat height 41 cm About the Designer: Rino Levi was a Brazilian architect important to the development of modernism in Brazil. Levi was born to Italian Jewish parents on December 31, 1901 in São Paulo, Brazil. After graduating from Colégio Dante Alighieri in São Paulo, Levi studied in Milan and Rome under Marcello Piacentini. In 1924, he moved to the School of Architecture of Rome. There, he met Adalberto...

  • Mid-Century Danish Cabinetmaker Sideboard, Denmark, 1960s
    Located in Utrecht, NL
Many associate Danish furniture with the country's golden age, the mid-20th century. This model shows why: its design follows in the vein of Scandinavian functionality, timelessness and quality. It has a classic look, recalling the designs created for H.P. Hansen by Arne Vodder, where functionality was met with the highest quality and materials. The wooden veneer has a grain that has come out beautifully over time, and gives the sideboard its defining, striking look. The wide surfaces and the strict rectangular look are perfect to showcase the patterns. The four sliding doors reveal the versatile shelving and storage system...
