About the Item

Bargueño; Spain, 17th century. Walnut wood. Period fittings and the foot made in the XIX century. / Herrajes de época, pie siglo XIX. Bargueño with small columns, with a folding front cover, decorated on the outside with cut and openwork metal plates, applied on a background of red fabric (frequent in this typology). The exterior decoration is completed on the sides with arched handles with a central bob and long hinges, also very typical of this model. It stands on a modern foot built with ancient elements, supported by six turned legs, combining different dynamic turns, typically Baroque, joined by straight shoes with the front carved in the shape of a lion's claw. This foot also has a straight chambrane decorated with carvings and an arches of turned columns. The horizontal supports that support the cabinet are topped by fantastic masks, halfway between Mannerist and Baroque figuration. The work is characterized by the great richness in the interior sample, with a decoration based on columns, turned and gilded, as we see here. The most usual thing in this model is that the sample has drawers with fronts following different models, which are mixed as we see here. The sample is organized in three registers, as usual, although the central chapel that usually appears is replaced by larger drawers. The lower register houses a large central drawer and two smaller ones on each side. All five are decorated with a serlianascheme (lowered arch flanked by two smaller semicircular arches), typical of Spanish furniture not only in the 17th century, but also in the 16th. This architectural scheme typical of the columnar desk is repeated in the two upper registers, although with variations in the design. The personality of the Spanish style will be so strong in the seventeenth century that it will prevent the penetration of external influences, especially from France due to the bad diplomatic situation of the moment, and this will be a great influence with the rest of Europe, where French models will mainly dominate. . The seventeenth century in Spain is a time of decadence, and this will be greatly noticed in furniture. There will not be pieces as luxurious as in other countries, a fact also determined by the pragmatics against luxury dictated by the monarchs. However, Spanish furniture from the Baroque period presents a not inconsiderable quality, an enormous personality and, above all, a great interest from the point of view of the typologies and the search for functionality over the decorative. It should also be noted the increasing valuation of furniture compared to the previous century. Taking into account the inventories of goods, important changes are seen, becoming furniture, in the time of Carlos II, even more expensive than tapestries." · Size: 115 x 46 x 160 cm.
