About the Item

This very unique piece started off life as a Victorian period mahogany chest of drawers, made in England around the year 1890. At some point, it was converted with all but the top and bottom drawers being removed and cabinet doors put in their place. The result is a very beautiful cupboard that would function well for many uses. This includes putting a TV in. Inside the cabinet is a removable wooden shelf. To the back is affixed a metal label which reads "F Thomas Cabinetmaker Halesowen". While we are not certain if this is the original maker of the chest, or the cabinetmaker who retro-fitted the piece, we believe he is the latter. Overall the condition of this piece is good. The mahogany has a lovely patina and color. The doors (added later) match the rest of the piece very well. Unfortunately the right door has a slight warp at the bottom, causing it to stick out a little (obvious in pictures). This does not prevent the doors from closing and locking. A key is present for the doors, but no key remains for the locks on the drawers. There is a repair to the top hing of the left door. The drawers do slide in and out easily. The bottom drawer has an age separation in the drawer bottom, left side. There are various small marks, indents, gouges, and veneer patches here and there throughout the piece. The feet have a good bit of cosmetic wear. Finally, there are two minor age separations to the top boards as well. Despite these minor marks, the piece still has an overall gorgeous look and is full of character. It's definitely a unique cabinet with great provenance that will look good in any home! The cabinet has interior measurements of 48.5" wide x 19.75" deep x 27" tall.
