About the Item
Mid-size, Dark reddish brown Urushi lacquered Tansu chest of drawers made of Sugi cedar - a product of late Edo to early Meiji era (circa 1860s-1880s) , estimate from the style & conditions. Original urushi lacquer remains in nice wabi sabi touch.
Original antique iron handles are simple and relatively thin - it means older and it's daily use furniture for ordinary people, it's also one of wabi sabi elements.
Guessing from the style, this would be used as Isho tansu (chest of drawers for clothing). The inside of the drawers still clean, also drawers open & close smoothly.
Having good storage capacity with deep drawers.
Originally made with traditional wood joinery without metal fastener.
The structural parts are made of the thick lumbers, it's still tough enough for actual use.
