About the Item

An exceptional two part Connecticut Queen Anne cherry bonnet top highboy attributed to the Workshop of Brewster Dayton, its upper case featuring a swan's neck split pediment with three carved flame finials surmounting a central inlaid star above a unique radial spoon carved fan on the central upper fitted drawer of a three over three drawer configuration flanked by reeded corners, over a lower case with a two over three fitted drawer configuration, the lower center of which featuring a nother radial carved fan, over a nicely carved skirt with two delicately carved drops, all supported by four cabriole legs terminating with trifid feet. Dayton’s carved feet feature a central spade-shaped toe and are blockier than Hubbell’s more modeled feet, another cabinetmaker in Stratford, CT. Brewster Dayton (working in Stratford ca. 1762–1796) was born across Long Island Sound in Brookhaven, New York, and apprenticed with an English-trained immigrant joiner in Stratford. His early experiences exposed him to the Anglo-Dutch work of Long Island and the vernacular Georgian work of his master. This piece dates to the second half of the 18th century and is in very good condition, with some minor surface repairs and restorations, imperfections and light wear commensurate with age and use. The period brasses appear to have been replaced and the drawer lock hardware was removed at some point. Dimensions: 88.5 in H x 43 in W x 22.75 in D. Ref: 8.
