About the Item

Louis XVI chest of drawers hand-made in France in the mid 1800s using walnut for both the case as well as the veneer. This chest of drawers was originally built and used as vestments storage in a church in the South of France, In fact, in the middle of the structure we can find a pull out panels that was used to arrange the garments before mass. The dresser has three rows of drawers all with beautiful hand-made dovetail joints. The two row is made of three smaller drawers, whereas the bottom two rows have a single, large drawer. Despite their size the drawers still slide very well and can be used on a daily basis. The drawer fronts are decorated with a small linear rectangular satin wood inlay and below the first drawer we also find three inlaid stars. The sides of the case are decorated with inset solid wood herring bone parquet. The top shows rounded corners following the curving of the fluted corners of the case. The apron is scalloped and decorated by a repeating carved motif that repeats on three sides. The chest of drawers was bleached, bringing out the beautiful grain of the walnut. The bleached color actually works very well for this chest because it is very big and the light tones make it look much less imposing. This is a chest of drawers that can be used on a daily basis and provide plenty of storage space.
