About the Item
18th Century Country French Walnut Marble Top Commode ~ Chest of Drawers was considered a luxury during its era, when closets had yet to be invented and having lots of clothes was reserved for the more affluent. Crafted from fine French walnut with adornment inspired by the Louis XIV style, it features a gracefully contoured facade which is accentuated by tailored shaping and luxuriously detailed cast bronze key guards and drawer pulls. Supported by scrolled legs flanking the undulating apron fitted with a cast bronze mount, it has been topped with gray and white contoured and beveled marble. The bronze ornamentation was designed to define the style, with oval key guards with ribbon flanked by the same forms on the drawers surrounded by laurel garlands. The apron embellishment features a flaming urn, oak leaves, acanthus plumes and a bold lion's head. What an incredible combination of the finest indigenous furniture wood from Europe melded with ancient stone and sculpted bronze!
