18th Century French Louis XVI Period Mahogany Commode with Saint Anne Marble Top

About the Item

A fine 18th century French Louis XVI period commode de port handcrafted of Cuban mahogany by skilled artisans from the Bordeaux region of France, circa 1770s, having a moulded cookie cutter top of Saint Anne des Pyrenees gray marble above three drawers adorned with original brass trim and neoclassical drop bail brass handles and ribbon escutcheons. Supported on curved and fluted stiles raised on toupie feet ending in brass sabots. Meubles de Port are pieces of furniture handcrafted of solid exotic wood, primarily mahogany, in certain French port cities such as Nantes, Saint Malo, and Bordeaux throughout the 18th century. Bordeaux was a wealthy port city that promoted trade with Africa, the West Indies, and America, and it's thanks to the development of the trade in precious woods that we see the appearance of furniture in solid mahogany, a wood that came from these countries. Used to hold goods at sea, huge quantities of mahogany logs were thrown onto the quays and salvaged by local craftsmen. Taking advantage of the veins, these cabinet makers exploited the distinct properties of Cuban mahogany and created elegant port furniture in tune with the refined and discreet luxury of Bordeaux residences. The beauty is in the refinement of the details of this exceptional 18th century commode de port Bordelais that complements both contemporary and traditional interiors. An early 19th century French Louis XVI style two-drawer commode sauteuse handcrafted of walnut near Paris, circa early 1800s. Having an inset rectangular plank top over two full size drawers with raised carved center panels, this beautifully patinated French chest of drawers, also referred to as a "jumping commode" because of its long legs and two large drawers, is adorned with the original bronze drop bail handles and ribbon escutcheons. Carved apron raised on tapered, fluted legs.
