19th Century French Empire Period Bleached Walnut Commode with Marble Top

About the Item

A fine 19th century French Empire period four-drawer commode handcrafted of walnut, circa 1810. Having a bleached finish, this handsome antique French chest of drawers features a bookmatched burled walnut front with a gray fossil marble top resting above a hidden apron drawer above a bank of three full-size drawers. Typical of the Empire period, two ornate columns featuring decorative brass capitals and bases flank the bank of drawers. Finely chiseled gilt bronze rose pulls and escutcheons decorated with acorn leaf wreath motifs adorn the three lower drawers. Raised on tall carved circular feet. Strong and masculine, Empire furniture has a definitive geometric shape with level surfaces and distinct angles. Decorations were symmetrical, and motifs mirrored one another on each side. The scale of the drawers in this beautiful commode ensures ample storage wherever this chest is placed. The Empire period was characterized by a neoclassical style that drew inspiration from the decorative motifs and characteristics of Greco-Roman models. This new style was created after the French Revolution and established a direct connection with the new regime in power and was intended to clearly express the imperial majesty of Napoleonic France. Most of the furniture produced during the Empire period was made in and around Paris. Decorating a large residence in the Empire style reminded the owner's family and guests of their connection to the court and their relationship with its power and influence.
