18th Century French Walnut Louis XIV Commode

About the Item

Louis XIV commode band-made in Southern France in the mid 1700s using walnut and pegged constructions. The commode has beautiful color, patina, and character. The commode features three overlay drawers with beautiful handmade dovetail joints. The drawer fronts are decorated with hand carved molding around the handles and the escutcheons. The front of the chest shows a slightly serpentine shape which is repeated on the top. The top is made of two boards with ogee edges. The sides are made with flat chamfered panels framed by molding. The front corners are adorned with a hand carved inset column and the commode still sits on its original block feet. This is a beautiful and very old chest with beautiful warm color and and character. As shown in the video the drawers all work very well and can be used on a daily basis. The commode has beautiful lines that will work well in a room that has modern as well as antique furniture.

The straight grain and rich color of the cherry tree made it a desirable wood for constructing luxury furniture during the 18th century. One beautiful example is our period Louis XIV commode, which was hand-carved in France in the early 1700’s. Augmenting the lovely reddish-brown color of the commode is an arbalete top that slightly hangs over the three stacked drawers below. Each drawer has three bronze foliate fittings set inside geometric panels with recessed molding (two pierced foliate swag pulls flanking a small keyplate surrounded by a parted leaf). There is a unique, shallow pullout drawer with two concentric circle pulls built into the molded frieze. This drawer was most likely used to store jewelry and other small valuables. Canted corners can be seen along the front of the shaped top, with elongated asymmetrical panels beneath that flank the tiers of drawers...
