18th Century Halfcabinet/ Trumeau Commode, Cherrywood, Austria circa 1780
About the Item
Remarkable late 18th Century halfcabinet or so-called "Trumeau" commode from the "Josephinism" period in Austria. (called after Joseph II, holy Roman emperor in which he was the sole ruler of the famous Habsburg Monarchy for ten years (1780–1790)
Elaborately handcrafted in Austria around 1780, this one dreamlike antique halfcabinet/ commode impresses with its amazing looking herringbone veneer work, inlayed nutwood and ebonized fruitwood stripes. This extraordinary, over 240 year old commode was part of the inventory of a manorial property and offers two doors and a drawer, which can only be opened when the doors are open. A traditional hand-polished shellac finish preserves the marvellous veneered surfaces and perfectly accentuates the ornated pattern. The artfully crafted original brass fittings complete the incredible look of this valuable masterpiece from the late 18th century. A unique, eyecatching late 18th century halfcabinet/ commode, coming in perfect restored condition.

Louis XIV Cherrywood Commode from France, Early 18th Century
Located in Dallas, TX

There is a unique, shallow pullout drawer with two concentric circle pulls built into the molded frieze. This drawer was most likely used to store jewelry and other small valuables.
Canted corners can be seen along the front of the shaped top, with elongated asymmetrical panels beneath that flank the tiers of drawers...
