18th Century, Italian Neoclassical Inlaid Wood Chest of Drawers

About the Item

18th century, Italian neoclassical inlaid wood chest of drawers This refined neoclassical chest of drawers was done around the end of the 18th century in Genoa (Italy). The cabinet has two large drawers and a smaller upper pull-bar. Between the drawers there is no fixed crossbar, as it is integrated in the front of the drawer and slides with it. Of great executive level, the interior of the drawers are all in solid walnut, characteristic of the cabinet making. The dresser is entirely inlaid with the use of wooden essences that have different color. The inlaid surfaces have also been expertly pirographed and burnished and are in excellent condition. This very refined technique allows to create a greater definition of the ornaments and also to give three-dimensionality and chiaroscuro to the drawings. With a dark background, the elegant inlays create neoclassical designs inspired by the taste of the time and the famous furniture of the Lombard cabinet maker Giuseppe Maggiolini of Parabiago, who brought to the highest levels the technique of inlay applied to neoclassical furniture. On the front of the two large drawers and in the side, at the center of a reserve with geometric motif stands a large classical vase from which depart rich and complex circles and racemes, foliated motifs that extend gracefully throughout the surface. In correspondence of the upper drawer, both frontally and laterally, runs a band with inlays with phytomorphic motif similar to that of the central decoration. The structure is defined by four protruding uprights connected to each other by sleepers. This game of different levels and levels, which gives great value to the furniture, produces a game of perspective and movement of great effect. The pillars are also inlaid with foliated and floral decorations. Of great value, the four truncated legs of inverted pyramid are inlaid on three sides. The grey marble top is Coeval. The handles and mouthpieces of the lock, also original, are in gilded bronze finely chiselled. This dresser has a very elegant line and a particularly refined workmanship. It is in excellent condition, ready to be inserted in any environment of your home: suitable for a study or a room is also pleasant in a bedroom or in the entrance hall, combined with antique furniture and even more in modern contexts.

Pair of neoclassical Italian chests of drawers in inlaid wood, XVIII century
Located in Vicenza, IT
This exceptional pair of Italian neoclassical 18th century dressers in wood richly inlaid on the front, sides and 4 truncated pyramid legs are top-quality example of Italian 18th century cabinetmaking. The pair of commodes are originals from the second part of the 18th century (1780). The front of the pair of commodes is divided into three levels of drawers, two thinner ones at the top and bottom and a thicker central one. This arrangement makes the front of the pair of drawers even more elegant. On the front of the central drawer stands a large oval with two mirror-image neoclassical figures represented. Rich and complex foliate motifs start from the oval and extend gracefully across the entire surface. Corresponding to the upper and lower drawers, both frontally and laterally, runs a band with inlays depicting classical style garlands with ribbons, cameos and phytomorphic elements. On the side, inside geometric figures created through the combination of various wood essences there are other garlands and recurring elements in the inlays of the neoclassical period. The pillars are also inlaid with floral and leaf decorations. The four truncated pyramid legs are also inlaid. These eighteenth-century Italian chests of drawers were exhibited at the Triennale Museum in Milan on the occasion of the exhibition "Il Salone, la città", which took place in conjunction with the "Salone del Mobile" in Milan. We have all the documentation attesting to this museum exhibition. The dressers are entirely inlaid with the use of different wood essences. The inlaid surfaces have also been pyrographed and burnished and are in excellent condition. This very refined technique allows you to create greater definition of the decorations, giving three-dimensionality and chiaroscuro to the drawings. With a dark background, the elegant inlays create neoclassical designs inspired by the taste of the time and the famous furniture of the Lombard cabinetmaker Giuseppe Maggiolini di Parabiago, who brought the inlay technique applied to neoclassical furniture to the highest levels. The marble top is contemporary. The handles and mouthpieces of the locks, also original, are in gilded bronze. The neoclassical furniture of the eighteenth century The last quarter of the eighteenth century coincides with the affirmation of the neoclassical taste, in opposition to the previous rococo or baroque style, particularly widespread and appreciated in Lombardy. An echo of this transition is visible in Maggiolini's first works, namely rounded chests...
