18th Century Louis XV Style Kingwood Commode by Pierre Roussel

About the Item

Important and very fine French Louis XV style commode or chest of drawers stamped 'P. Roussel' (Pierre Roussel 1723-June 7, 1782 ). This commode with its three rows of drawers bears the maker's stamp of Pierre Roussel and is of characteristic rococo form. Remarkable patina. This very high quality 18th Century Louis XV Style Commode with Ormolu Bronze Mounts features its original marble top above a body of bombé shape, the whole inlaid with cube marquetry. It is further decorated with ornate gilt bronze mounts for the drawer pulls, keyholes, hipped corners, and dropped apron. Raised on cabriole legs with gilt bronze sabots, made with fine Kingwood (Bois de Violette). Original lock and key. Four drawers with ample storage space for lingerie, clothing, bed linens or anything you choose to use it for. This exquisite commode or chest of drawers measures 42 1/8" W × 21 1/4" D × 32 1/2" H. Professionally restored by our in-house French Master craftsman “Ebeniste” graduate from the famous Ecole Boulle in Paris. Pierre Roussel was a highly respected maître ébéniste (master cabinetmaker) of the Regence and Louis XV period. He specialized in the making of commodes, using geometric marquetry which create a three-dimensional almost shimmering effect. An effect that would have been picked out by its elaborate and very finely chased mounts, resulting in an object of rich reflections. Suppliers of the Court, the Prince of Conde and Princess of Monaco, a rich clientele of aristocrats and wealthy bourgeois, the Roussel family, native Cotentin, is an example of upward mobility and professional organization in the middle of the Parisian cabinetmaking in the 18th century. Records and extensive documentation, trace the works of the Roussel family, highlighting the works of Roussel and changing styles through the era, of more than 100 significant pieces of furniture, showing their technical and aesthetic inventiveness, and referring to the number of interactions with masters of the Faubourg Saint-Antoine and the market abroad. The furniture stamped by Roussel presented in numerous museums in France and in the world, such as the Petit Palais, the Decorative Arts, Carnavalet, Jacquemart-André, the Decorative Arts in Budapest and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. We have a passion for the unique, for quality, for stylish yet practical and for craftsmanship of years gone by. Your purchases will be extremely well packaged and we look forward to serving you.
