About the Item

Richly decorated classicist chest of drawers Dresden Walnut a.o. Plait style around 1785 Dimensions: H x W x D: 85 x 122 x 63 cm Description: Fine and detailed chest of drawers of the German classicism, the so-called Zopfstil. The design of this piece of furniture is typical for the late 18th century. Comparable objects are known from Moritzburg Palace near Dresden and Gaußig Palace near Bautzen. A three-sided piece of furniture standing on tapered square feet with fluted marquetry. The front of the chest is slightly curved, typical of the period and the region, and the pilaster strips are set diagonally across the corner, thus following the shape of the feet. The drawers are thickly veneered and surrounded by light-dark contrasting bands of maple and ebonised pear. The fronts of the drawers are decorated with wonderfully fine fillet bands, as well as chains of strung and fire-shaded circular discs. The original fittings blend fantastically into the proportions of the fronts. On the sides, the design corresponds to the language of the furniture front. The walnut veneer is neatly mirrored here and ensures that the surface appears calm and coherent. The top plate is dominated by a figurative marquetry on a mirrored ground. Depicted is a mother at play with her child. Points of interest: This chest of drawers is a fbeautiful example of the high art of furniture making in late 18th century Dresden. The inlay work is fine and fits perfectly, the craftsmanship of the furniture is excellent. The original locks are also beautiful, as are the traces of old hand tools visible on the back panel, drawers and inside the corpus. Condition: Restored condition, shellac hand polish. All drawers run cleanly, the locks work.
