18th Century Louis XVI Mahogany Commode

About the Item

A very fine late 18th-century French Louis XVI/Directoire period commode, expertly crafted from figured mahogany. This exquisite piece showcases excellent proportions that blend both appeal and elegance, making it a remarkable addition to any refined interior. The commode is topped with the original Gris Sainte Anne marble, which features a beautifully shaped design with a moulded edge and eared corners. This marble top not only adds sophistication but also serves as a durable surface for display or storage. Below the marble top are three long, graduated oak lined drawers lined, offering ample storage space while maintaining an elegant appearance. Each drawer front is adorned with polished brass moulding (bois laiton) and original rectangular handles, enhancing its luxurious appeal. The commode is flanked by fluted turned columns that add a touch of classical elegance. It stands on tapering toupie feet, which are protected by brass shoulders and sabots, ensuring both stability and protection for your floors. Throughout the piece, decorative brass mounts accentuate the rich mahogany, further enhancing its visual interest and showcasing the craftsmanship of the period. This commode has achieved a superb deep patina over its 200-plus years, reflecting its historical significance and quality construction. It retains its original shaped key, adding to its authenticity.
