18th Century Swedish Painted Rococo Commode

About the Item

A beautiful late 18th century Swedish commode from the Rococo period with original brass hardware and locks. This commode has a serpentine front, shaped top and apron to the front and sides, and is raised on cabriole legs. The Swedes refined the Rococo style to a lean elegance as captured in this beautiful commode. The finish is not the original paint. It has been repainted. The drawers seem to have been replaced and repaired with newer wood at some point and do feature dove tail. This is a stunning piece that is perfect for any design space and is in great condition. The Rococo period followed the Baroque period and is often described as the final expression of the Baroque movement. The period began in the 1720s and continued through 1770. Rococo takes its name from the French word 'rocaille,' which means rock or broken shell. This period was characterized by elaborately carved, smaller and more functional pieces, the cabriole leg, and cherub, fruit, shell, flower, and scroll motifs.
