About the Item

Chest of drawers, red stained wood, Italy, 1940s This Italian cabinet from the 1940s presents an unusually architectural interpretation of domestic storage furniture. Its form is defined less by ornament than by structure, yet is it is far from minimalist. The cabinet’s shape is composed of tightly controlled horizontal layering, a rhythm established by a clear delineation between each drawer front, particularly emphasized by the grooves and lines that run the entire width of the piece. The body is divided into two main visual bands: above, a stack of eight small drawers that retreat subtly into the depth of the upper register, and below, a more bulkier section of four broad drawers that anchor the cabinet with weight and mass. These two zones are bridged by a plateau, adding depth to the piece. What is perhaps most distinctive is the rectilinear geometry of the external framing composed of rounded corner posts with horizontal and vertical rods that wrap the body. The front feet of the cabinet are slender and gently flared at the bottom. The dark red-stained wood enhances the cabinet’s luxurious presence. The geometry is strict, almost grid-like, yet it is layered and composed with a theatrical sense of rhythm that feels inherited from Art Deco’s love of surface drama. Kindly note that the surface displays a subtle craquelure which, rather than detracting from the piece, adds to its charm.
