About the Item
Classic Louis Philippe walnut commode featuring a beautifully variegated black marble top with rounded corners above four drawers, each fitted with gilt-metal rosette pulls, medallion escutcheons, and a central gilt mount depicting twin winged phoenixes flanking an urn. The restrained architectural form, figured walnut veneer, and subtle gilt ornamentation are characteristic of the refined yet understated elegance of the Louis Philippe period. Raised on turned bun feet.

36.5 in. high × 52 in. wide × 22.5 in. deep
Condition:
Good/Fair; light surface wear and minor ring marks to marble top, veneer chips and losses to case, separation visible to interior drawer panels, and one pull repaired. Structurally solid and presents well with warm patina.
Provenance:
From the Iris Apfel Collection, reflecting the personal furnishings of the late fashion icon, businesswoman, and interior designer (1921–2024). Apfel’s interiors blended cosmopolitan sophistication with layered historical references—combining European antiques, exotic textiles, and witty design contrasts. This commode exemplifies her appreciation for pieces with enduring character and craftsmanship, used as both functional storage and sculptural accent in her exuberantly curated spaces.
Attribution:
French, mid-19th century, in the manner of Maison Lannuier or Jacob-Desmalter successors, whose workshops produced fine walnut and mahogany commodes with gilt mounts and marble tops for the Parisian bourgeoisie of the 1840s–1860s.
