19th Century French Henri II Marble Top Walnut Commode
About the Item
19th century French Henri II marble top walnut commode represents the impeccable melding of neoclassical architecture inspired by the ancient Greeks and Romans, with hand-carved embellishment inspired by the Renaissance around 1500AD. This example is topped with beautifully veined rouge marble with a subtle, rusty brick red coloration fully beveled on three sides. Below appears four drawers, the top most richly carved with a repetitive egg motif in a Greek coin pattern, with the three drawers below more tailored with only shells carved on the sides. Each drawer sports a pair of heavy cast bronze bale pulls for ease of access that is classically styled. The drawers are framed on the corners by 3/4 columns with deep ridges and flutes topped with Doric capitals and an urn pediment carved with foliate motif. Trimming the entire perimeter of the base is a rectilinear interpretation of the egg in Greek coin motif framed by molded detail, and supported by carved, urn-shaped feet. The combination of the sumptuous French walnut, the hand-cast bronze and hand-beveled marble is truly timeless!
