About the Item
19th Century French Louis XIV Marble Top Commode ~ Chest of Drawers exudes a stately elegance that is truly timeless! Hand-crafted from dense, old-growth oak, it features a casework that is framed by full length scrolled cornerposts carved with acanthus plumes and bell flowers above and below, with flared feet tipped with escargots. What appears to be three drawers is actually four, with each drawer panel defined by fine molded detail including stylized shell and foliate motifs. Centered on each drawer panel is a cast bronze pull, with the left and right sides being mirror images. In the middle is a molded framework surrounding the finely cast bronze key guard. Below the drawers is an elegantly scrolled apron centered with a scallop shell flanked by acanthus fronds. Even the sides have received the sculptor's attention, with the same flared legs carved with escargot and acanthus plumes, with a finely scrolled apron and intriguing raised panel design. The entire facade follows a subtle arbalette form, named after the archer's bow, which is continued in the contours and beveling of the luxuriously veined marble top for the perfect finishing touch!
