19th Century Satinwood Rosewood Ebony Colonial Chest

About the Item

An unusual Colonial early-19th century solid satinwood-faced chest of drawers with cupboards. Circa 1820. The carcass is in solid rosewood and ebony. It features a broad ebony crossbanded mitred top. All of very good rich colour, and in its original state. In excellent condition and of lovely quality throughout. An arrangement of working drawers above two cupboards faced with broadly-chamfered fronts, centered by roundels and turned, recessed pulls around a central arched recess. Raised on short cabriole legs. Unusually, the angles are fluted, and the sides with raised, bold, fielded panels. Probably East India Company (VOC). Nb. Rosewood was grown largely in Brazil and the Dutch East Indies. It comes in many varieties some of which are fragrant when freshly cut, from which the name rosewood is derived. In the solid it is extremely hard and heavy. The best ebony comes from Ceylon and South India – also an extremely hard and heavy wood – often used in inlays during the 17th and 18th centuries.

    Located in Lymington, GB
An English semi-elliptical, or demilune (half moon), inlaid satinwood commode of neoclassical form. Of very good rich color and patination. The marquetry in kingwood, tulipwood, burr veneers and harewood. The fine quality top inlaid with a large conch shell, with radiating trailing marquetry of bell-flower ribands, within a Vitruvian scroll border. This inlaid commode (or chest) contains three hinged cupboard doors each centred by oval panels inlaid with two-handled classical urns with drapery and flambeaux, on plinths set with burr veneers. The central cupboard revealing a bank of three oak-lined fitted drawers. The flanking cupboards with shelves. Raised on short square tapering legs and spade feet. 19th century, with 18th-century elements. All in excellent condition and of superb quality. Satinwood and marquetry commodes of this design reflect some of the highest achievements in English cabinet-making. Sometimes these antique commodes reveal the hand of two different master cabinet-makers, with tops differing from the bases. References: For a comparison see A. Hepplewhite and Co., Cabinet Maker, 'The Cabinet - Maker and Upholsterer's Guide' (1788) plate 78: ''Design for a Commode, enriched with painted or inlaid work adapted for a drawing room, within are shelves which answer the use of a closet or cupboard - may have one principal door in the front, or one at each end; are made of various shapes; and being used in principal rooms, require considerable elegance. The panels may be of satin wood, plain or inlaid; the top, and also the border round the front, should be inlaid.'' A fine George III satinwood and marquetry demilune commode attributed to Thomas Chippendale sold for £134,500 in Bonhams 'Fine English Furniture & Works of Art Sale', 19 Nov 2014. • Rare Charles II Period Chest
    Located in Lymington, GB
This exceptional 17th-century chest / cabinet has one long working drawer, and one deep drawer, with cupboards retaining internal shelving below. All faced with elaborate, mitred, geometric mouldings, applied split balusters, carved corbels, roundels and engraved mother-of-pearl and bone panels. Some panels apparently in ebony. Dentil cornice to the frieze. Bun feet replaced following the original design. Great colour, old surfaces and overall condition is excellent. It conveniently divides into two sections. Circa 1660. Provenance: Lisgoole Abbey, N. Ireland. Literature: R. W. Symonds, 'The Present State of Old English Furniture', Duckworth, London (1921) fig. 7, dated 1673. Vis a very similar 17th c chest. Percy Macquoid RI, 'A History Of English Furniture - The Age Of Oak', Lawrence & Bullen, London (1904-08) p. 76, figs. 140 & 141, for two similar chests of ''well considered proportions and details’’. Figs. 203 - 210 exhibit further similarities in design, and MacQuoid states that “the fashion for these chests must have been great, as many varieties of them… followed rapidly upon one another in date” [sic] pp. 97-99. Viz p. 77, fig. 141 (Oak chest with drawers). The top opens in a long drawer, below is a very deep drawer, panelled in strong projection, the bevels of which are of so-called zebra or snake-wood. The lower portion of the chest, opening in two doors... [sic]. Nb. The chest illustrated in Macquoid is of oak, but in 1680 it was probably to match some other furniture, painted black and lacquered in what was then termed ''The Indian Taste'', so very fashionable for a time. The bone and pearl inlay is very cleverly imitated in the lacquer-work. Ralph Edwards CBE FSA, 'The Shorter Dictionary of English Furniture', Hamlyn, London (Fourth Impression 1972) “The next stage in the evolution (of the chest) was delayed until c. 1650, when a hybrid form, half cabinet and half chest...
