About the Item

A finely hand crafted piece in the manner of the Philadelphia forms of the late 18th Century, this highboy was probably crafted shortly after the Centennial during the last years of the 19th century or possibly the first quarter of the 20th Century. It exhibits a skilled and confident hand throughout, the broken-arch pediment with finely carved floral rosette terminals flanking and flanked by flame finials raised on fluted plinths. The crown molding projects gently over the graduated facade of twelve drawers flanked by fluted corinthian columns at the corners of the case. The top and bottom center drawers are carefully carved with the repeating lobes of a shell, the lower drawer resting over a single shell carving at the lowest point of the delightfully scalloped apron. Each knee is shell carved, the bold and perfectly formed cabriole legs terminating in fine ball and claw feet. Each drawer is hand dovetailed with precise pins, the bottoms deeply chamfered and set in grooves in the period manner. Particularly attractive is the very old and oxidized surface of the chest, darkened and crazed by time and simply delightful. The chest is an absolute statement piece for anyone passionate about the Chippendale taste. With countless hours invested in perfectly executing every detail of the case, this is a work of remarkable quality that was built to last the test of time. Measurements: [total] 84 15/16" H x 21 1/8" D x 40" W; [lower section] 33 15/16" H; [upper section] 49 5/8" H Condition Report: Original surface preserved in excellent condition, heavily oxidized and darkening in a most attractive way; crazing to finish throughout.
