Antique 5-Foot Long French Commode in Sculpted Oak, Original Marble Top, C. 1860

About the Item

A rather unusual French commode, given the approximate width of 60 inches, this sculpted oak chest of drawers was hand-carved circa 1860. A relatively thin (1 1/8 inch in depth) original marble top enhances the elongated appearance by gently overhanging the wood below. The sleek gray stone with white and black veining has a chamfered molding with round protuberances in the front, followed by more angular ones at the back corners. Foliate and flower margents surrounded by oval molding embellish each of the four drawers. Two full-length drawers are presented beneath a pair of half-drawers flanking a faux rosette keyplate set within a roundel. Identical keyplates are on both of the full drawers, while all drawers have circular bronze pulls set within the nature-inspired margents and molding. The shaped apron has a much longer margent that runs behind the central floral bouquet medallion. Additional leaf margents adorn the rounded shoulders, which terminate in a pair of volute feet. Both back feet are blocked, adding to the rectilinear nature of the side panels. Our beautiful French commode, measuring almost five feet in width, would make a fantastic addition to any bedroom, entry hall, or living room.
