Antique French Louis Philippe Commode Pull Out Secretary Hidden Storage Restored

About the Item

Spectacular 19th century French Louis Philippe book-matched mahogany commode, dresser or chest of drawers constructed to a very high standard. Typically, we would not purchase an average Louis Philippe Commode or Chest for really, they are rather common, however, when they are built with such attention to detail in attention to having two very tricky hidden compartments, then they become simply irresistible. The hidden secretive hidden compartments actually pop out with what is almost an invisible touch opener. One would be hard pressed to locate the visually camouflaged release device and absolutely the coolest we have ever seen on a piece of furniture. Our Old Plank finishing department merely washed off the old finish and applied an old school French polish without having to re-stain or heavily sand the beautiful mahogany matched veneer. Please note that there are some blemishes in the marble top and we were betwixt on whether or not to send it our for sanding and polishing, but then you lose the nearly 200-year old patina and I'm not sure it would have sense for it always can be done at a later date. The leather and gilding remain original to the Commode and we did restore the leather to its original green.  **Please note the marble is scratched and etched, images 7 and 8.

Neoclassic Period French Commode W/Hidden Butler's Secretary & Writing Desk
Located in Atlanta, GA
A French Neoclassical commode, with hidden secretary and original hardware, from the turn of the 18th and 19th century. This antique commode from France gives the appearance of being a three drawer chest at first glance. However, discreetly hidden behind the upper "drawer" is in fact a fall-front, which opens to reveal a small writing desk with three open cubbies for organization within. The lower portion of the chest houses two full-sized drawers. The rectangular-shaped top has pronounced and rounded front corners, which carry through down the side posts and are flute-carved. Each drawer front is adorn with brass trim and retains the original brass (and really great) hardware; a pair of rectangular bail pulls with a beautiful Neoclassic escutcheon set at center. This commode is presented upon conical legs with exaggerated tops that canopy over their tapered feet. The rich fruitwood has a wonderful old patina throughout. Note that there have been some prior repairs to the top. This late 18th century French...
