Antique French Regence Style Parquetry Commode, Early 20th Century
About the Item
Attributed to the famed Parisian interior decorator firm, Maison Jansen, this Regence-style commode from the early 1900s features a beautiful parquetry of dark brown and honey-colored veneers. The multi-colored palette accentuates the parquetry, allowing the individual patterns to stand out. For example, the lightly overhanging top consists of three geometric motifs set within a large rectangle, that is in turn surrounded by a think molding of bronze.
Each of the three tiers of drawers has a pair of bronze drop handles with floret mounts that are inset within a parquetry rectangle. A slightly asymmetrical (the Regence period is known for its use of asymmetrical elements within an overall uniform composition) key plate, in the form of a leaf, graces the center of each drawer. Both front feet, as well as the center of the apron, are embellished with more bronze mounts inspired by nature, containing pebbles, segmented shells, curled leaves, and fleur de lys.
Maison Jansen was founded in 1880 by Dutch-born Jean-Henri Jansen. Considered the first truly global design firm, Maison Jansen serviced clients from the Middle East to Latin America. Originally relying on outside sources to craft furniture for their projects, Maison Jansen opened a production factory in the 1890s, allowing them to produce original designs. This Regence-style parquetry commode is a beautiful example of a Maison Jansen piece that can be placed anywhere a chest of drawers is needed.

Louis XIV Cherrywood Commode from France, Early 18th Century
Located in Dallas, TX
The straight grain and rich color of the cherry tree made it a desirable wood for constructing luxury furniture during the 18th century. One beautiful example is our period Louis XIV commode, which was hand-carved in France in the early 1700’s.
Augmenting the lovely reddish-brown color of the commode is an arbalete top that slightly hangs over the three stacked drawers below. Each drawer has three bronze foliate fittings set inside geometric panels with recessed molding (two pierced foliate swag pulls flanking a small keyplate surrounded by a parted leaf). There is a unique, shallow pullout drawer with two concentric circle pulls built into the molded frieze. This drawer was most likely used to store jewelry and other small valuables.
Canted corners can be seen along the front of the shaped top, with elongated asymmetrical panels beneath that flank the tiers of drawers...
