Antique French Regency Style Commode With Marble Top
About the Item
Elegant antique French commode in Regency style with beautiful and skillfully applied walnut veneers in marquetry pattern. The commode retains its original hand- cut rouge marble often associated with marble used at Versailles. The case of the commode shows hand-made qualities as seen in 18th century pieces of the same style. However, the drawers with hard wood sides and bottoms have rabbet joints indicating late 19th century origin. Probably made in workshops of Paris or Lyon, as evidenced by its more formal and precise style. Carefully cut veneers in walnut applied to handmade case exaggerating subtle differences in walnut veneer colors. The marble is hand cut with an ogee edge. The finish was probably originally a French polish in lacquer, but now has a polished French wax finish.
