Antique George III period mahogany serpentine chest of drawers

About the Item

A very fine mid-18th Century Chippendale period well-figured mahogany serpentine Chest, having carved canted cornered edged top, above brushing slide & four graduated cockbeaded drawers retaining original handles & escutcheons. The Chest with fitted top drawer & lattice fret carving to the corners, supported on ornately carved bracket feet to front and rear. This exceptional chest of drawers is particularly distinctive because of its finely executed details, which makes it stand out from other examples of the early George III period. The carving is very crisp along the shaped top edge of the serpentine front and sides, depicting acanthus leaves. The corners have blind fret work with carved flowers interwoven between the fret, which is very sophisticated. This chest, with its brushing slide, has a fitted top drawer of small lidded containers which are finely made. The original cast brass handles and flamboyant rococo escutcheons are really eye catching. What is also striking though is that the carving on the serpentine base mirrors the carving on the top edge of the chest. To complete the poem in intricate carving and blind fretwork though is the boldly carved ogee bracket feet. There you will spot a symphony of blind fretwork, ribbon and rose carving and bold hare-bells, all in patinated mahogany. This fine Chippendale piece epitomises the rococo period in English cabinet making and is a must for any established collector of fine English furniture.
