Benchmade Chippendale Style Bonnet-Top Chest on Chest, 20th Century

About the Item

Attention to period detail is noteworthy in this fine case piece. Crafted in the manner of the Connecticut River Valley examples of the late 18th Century, the chest on chest features bold fluted corner columns in both upper and lower cases flanking an impressive array of graduated drawers. Each drawer is hand dovetailed with hand planed bottom boards chamfered along the edges and set in grooves along the sides. The drawers retain original hardware, these brasses hand filed to lend an air of early authenticity to the case. Particularly striking are the lobed-shell drawers central to the upper and lower cases, these carved by a clearly skilled hand with a high degree of fluidity and confidence - they are gorgeous three dimensional strike points. A full bonnet top completes the case, the broken arch pediment terminating in beautiful carved pinwheel rosettes with three turned flame finials spaced equally along the crest. The back of the case shows inordinate adherence to period craftsmanship, the bonnet top being entirely dovetailed along the inner edges and the feet supports likewise dovetailing into the facings. This is a case that was built to last the test of time and has already done so quite beautifully, the whole remaining in nearly pristine condition. The dimensions are noteworthy, as the case is sized appropriately for today's interior with a full height of exactly 78 1/2", making it just slightly diminutive in stature against the typical period chest on chest but also allowing it to be a more comfortable feature of the room by not dominating whatever setting it joins. The case does not have any branding or markings that would indicate who the craftsman was, but clearly no expense was spared in time or material investment - this is a fine piece that will surely be a cherished part of your home for a lifetime. Measurements: maximum dimensions are 78 1/2" H x 40 1/2" W x 21 3/4" D; lower case is 32 1/4" H x 40 1/2" W x 21 3/4" D; upper case is 43 1/2" H x 39" W x 21" D Condition Report: Very minor surface dings and abrasions with subtle color variation from sun exposure - overall the chest remains in simply exceptional condition and is an absolutely gorgeous presentation.
