About the Item

A rare Modernist Chest of Drawers by Deutsche Werkstätten Hellerau, Inspired by Platonic Forms, Germany, late 1920s This chest of drawers was produced by Deutsche Werkstätten Hellerau, one of the most important centers of German design and craftsmanship in the early 20th century, after the designs of Bruno Paul and Karl Bertsch. Its design draws direct inspiration from Platonic solids (Grundformen)—a principle that was widely explored in German design theory and applied by the designer and reformer Paul Thiersch. The rounded, almost sculptural drawer fronts reflect a deliberate engagement with geometric existentiality. The chest features four drawers with integrated keyholes and rests on tapered legs. A drawing of a six-drawer chest numbered (model no. 8027) exists in the archives of the Saxon State Archives (Sächsisches Staatsarchiv). Notably, similar models were part of Karl Lagerfeld's private collection. One was sold at Sotheby's Monaco on December 3, 2021, in the auction Karl Lagerfeld's Estate Part I, lot 173. Another was sold at Sotheby's Cologne on May 5, 2022, in Karl Lagerfeld's Estate III, Day Sale, lot 61.
