About the Item

This two-drawer chest is a fine example of early 20th century North German furniture, dating from around 1910. The piece features a gently bombe (convex) front and beautifully figured veneer - particularly on the drawer fronts - where the grain is not mirrored but laid side by side, enhancing the linear rhythm of the surface. The top is a slab of richly colored red marble with natural white veining, adding weight and presence to the design. The drawers are set between visible horizontal rails (traverses) that, unlike the rest of the case, are not veneered - a subtle but deliberate gesture often found in traditional cabinetmaking. The drawer pulls are in stamped brass, lightly patinated. Most striking are the carved solid wood legs, whose spiral shapes recall shepherd's crooks or stylized Ionic scrolls. Their mass and archaic simplicity suggest the influence of Bernhard Hoetger, known for his expressionist and elemental forms. As an interior designer, I chose this piece for a project that seeks to balance elegance with a sense of the archaic - to create a space where historical weight meets modern clarity. It is part of my curated selection for a residence that embraces texture, presence and the quiet drama of handcrafted furniture.
