Brazilian Modern Chest of Drawers in Hardwood by Moveis Cimo, 1950s, Brazil

About the Item

Available today, this Mid-Century Modern chest of drawers made in hardwood and yellow formica designed by Moveis Cimo in the fifties is a very rare FIND and is gorgeous! The chest is entirely made in Imbuia hardwood and features a rectangular structure with curved ends, three large drawers with five yellow formica circles that act as handles (to open the drawers) and four delicate legs. There are many things that make this piece special: An ICONIC DESIGN that encapsulates Brazilian Modernism of the fifties decade (straight lines, curved ends, exuberant use of wood and funky use of Formica, a new Material that became mainstream in Brazil around the forties and fifties. The WOOD and JOINERY: This is some of the finest Imbuia hardwood I’ve seen and is in excellent condition. Like red wine, many hardwoods get better with time (Lighter, stiffer) and this is a good example of it. The joinery is also fantastic, smooth, straight lines, functional and can be seen in the drawers, legs and under the piece. HARD TO FIND: Finding a piece like this in good condition is difficult and this may be because in the fifties, high quality furniture was still artisanal and production badges were way smaller than in the sixties and onwards, when the country’s industrialization started. Moveis Cimo produced beautiful furniture but few are collectible like this one (because of the reasons above). There are many publications showcasing this piece. Attached a few images. The chest of drawers is showcased in our gallery with a gorgeous Scapinelli armchair and they look exquisite together. This piece would look great in any Mid-Century Modern, or postmodern type environment and the iconic design and Size will make this desk an absolute must in everyone’s mid modern century collection. Móveis Cimo was created by Jorge Zipperer and Willy Jung, in 1913, Santa Catarina, Brazil. From the 1930s to the 1970s Cimo was the largest furniture factory in Latin America. Cimo's history starts in 1921 with a wood boxes factory called A.Ehrl e Cia. and ends in 1982 as a furniture factory, after a lot of names and format changes, as Móveis Cimo S.A. Cimo was committed to industrialization, carrying out the standardization of products, and facing serial production challenges. In the search for more accessible prices for the popular strata, the company did not abandon the possibility of developing quality products by rationalizing production, making better use of materials, and using advanced technologies for the time. Móveis Cimo became the largest furniture producer in Latin America, playing a fundamental role in developing its region and the advancement of manufacturing series furniture in the country, being a Pioneer in several sectors and an essential chapter in the history of Brazilian furniture making.
