About the Item

We are delighted to offer for sale this extremely rare very large Howard & Son’s 1881 stamped burr & burl walnut chest of drawers with military history These are pretty much the finest quality chest of drawers I have ever laid my hands on, they are substantial in weight, the cuts of walnut have a deep rich grain and simply glow in the right light, they are the most exquisite quality. The inside top right drawer is stamped Howard & Son’s Berners street, there is also remnants of a paper label which has the serial number on of 8696 4332 and then “Easy Chair & Sofa Factory, Howard & Son’s Upholsterers 2526 & 27 Berners Street London Patent dining table” What a great piece of history. The real Piece De Resistance! Is the back of the drawers, they have the original name tag of the owner who commissioned them, one Sir C Pigott, its dated Sept 12 1881, the full history of the good chap is as follows "Captain Pigott, was born 13 January 1859, son of Sir Charles Robert Pigott, 3rd Baronet, and Mary Louisa (who died in 1873), daughter of Captain C Hallowell Carew, RN, of Beddington Park, Surrey. He joined the 60th King's Royal Rifles; served in the Zulu War, 1879 (Medal with clasp); in the Boer War, 1881, with Mounted Infantry; in the Egyptian Campaign of 1882, in which he was dangerously wounded. He received the Medal, Bronze Star, the 5th Class Medjidie, and was promoted Captain, and given a troop in the 21st Lancers. He served in the Eastern Sudan Campaign in 1884 (two clasps); with the Nile Expedition, 1884-5 (two clasps). He was given the Brevet of Major in 1886, and in the same year married Fanny Ada, daughter of the Reverend Wellesley Pole Pigott, and Fanny, daughter of Bernard Granville, of Wellesbourne Hall, Warwickshire, and they had two children: Berkeley and Florence Ada Cecile. He served on the West Coast of Africa, 1887-8; and was created a Companion of the Distinguished Service Order [London Gazette, 9 March 1888]: "Charles Berkeley Pigott, Major, 21st Lancers". For services in Burma. He was promoted Lieutenant Colonel in 1896, and created a CB. Lieutenant Colonel Pigott took part in the Ashanti Expedition of 1895-96, and was made Commandant of Kumasi. All his promotions were Brevet, for services, and he was mentioned many times in Despatches. Lieutenant Colonel C B Pigott died 12 September 1897. Source: DSO recipients (VC and DSO Book)" And there you have it, quite an impressive gentleman. These drawers will only be listed for a short while until I move home, if they don’t sell until then I will be keeping them for myself as they are as rare as they come The condition is very very good, they have some light patination but mostly they are in fine order throughout Dimensions Height 49cm Width 115.5cm Depth 51cm Please note all measurements are taken at the widest point, if you would like any additional or specific measurements please ask A History of Howard and Sons The name of Howard and Sons is probably one of the best known and highly sought after names in Upholstered furniture. Over the next few paragraphs I will do my best to give you a brief history of the company. The company was started by John Howard in 1820 trading from 24 Leman St, London as a Cabinet Maker. Over the next 25 years they would make several changes of premises within the Whitechapel area. First to 27 Great Alie St (Now just Alie St) before moving a short distance to 34 Great Alie St. In 1844 the company made its first venture into upholstered furniture by opening a showroom/workshop at 36 Red lion St. This was also to be a big move towards what would be their next and most famous location. In 1848 they moved to a new address much more accustomed with the name; Berners St. London as “Cabinet Maker, Upholsterer and Decorator” under the name John Howard and Sons. The business seemed to boom at this location with workshops opening up at Tottenham St, Charlotte Mews and Fitzroy Sq and an expansion to a second Berners St building in 1853. In 1869 the company consolidated its many workshops into the one building on Cleveland St. By 1872 the company was occupying 25, 26 and 27 Berners St. These adresses would remain unchanged until 1935. During this period they became a limited company in 1899 and won the first of their Royal warrants in 1901. In 1935 the well established decorators Lenygon and Morant appear to take over the name with the business address being given as 31 Old Burlington St (Lenygon and Morants premesis since 1909). Lenygon and Morant later moved to South Audley St where from 1954 they advertised as 'Makers of Howard Chairs and Sofas'. In 1967 the owners of Lenygon and Morant open Howard Chairs Limited, the company operating from Lyme St continue to make high quality sofas and armchairs. Exhibitions and Important Houses: At the 1862 International Exhibition (The 3rd World Expo) Howard and Sons entered a suite of library furniture for which they won a prize. They also went on to exhibit at the Paris World's Fair, called an Exposition Universelle twice; once in 1878 and again in 1900. Also at the Exposition Internationale d'Anvers 1894 (International Exposition/World Fair Antwerp). Winning Prizes at them all including 1 silver and 2 golds. They also employed their eclectic styles working for many important clients providing furniture for important houses such as Sudbury Hall in Derbyshire, Elton Hall, Huntingdonshire and Stokesay Court, Shropshire This item is available for collection from our Wimbledon warehouses Condition Please view the very detailed pictures as they form part of the description around condition Please note vintage period and original items such as leather seating will always have natural patina in the form of cracking creasing and wear, we recommend regular waxing to ensure no moisture is lost, also hand dyed leather is not recommended to sit in direct sunlight for prolonged periods of time as it will dry out and fade.

The English firm of Holland & Sons (1803–1942) became from 1843 one of the largest and most successful cabinet makers, and a rival to Gillows of Lancaster and London. The company's labelled Day books are now housed in the Victoria and Albert Museum Archive of Art and Design where they present a virtual "who's who" of nineteenth century society. The company was established in 1803 by Stephen Taprell and William Holland, a relation of the architect Henry Holland. Always on the leading edge of fashion, Holland & Sons employed some of England's foremost designers and participated in all of the International Exhibitions of 1851, 1855, 1862, 1867, 1872 and 1878. Holland and Sons also participated in many of the leading international exhibitions including London in 1862, Vienna in 1873 and Paris in 1867 and 1872. After a brief period in which the company was known as Taprell, Holland & Son c.1835-43, William Holland gained sole command after the senior partner Taprell's retirement. From 1843 onwards they were known as Holland and Sons. The relationship between builder and cabinet maker is similar to another leading Victorian firm, Trollope and Sons. Their earliest known commission was to furnish the Athenaeum Club, London, 1824- 1838. They also worked alongside the prestigious firm of Thomas Dowbiggin at Osborne House, and eventually took over their premises and business at 23 Mount Street, London in 1851 and 1853 respectively. In 1851, when the company was based in Mount Street and employed 351 people, they won a prize at the Great Exhibition for a bookcase. By then, after being granted a Royal Warrant of Appointment (United Kingdom) early in the reign of Queen Victoria, they had already taken a leading part in the decoration and furnishing of Osborne House, Sandringham House, Balmoral Castle, Windsor Castle and the apartments of the Prince and Princess of Wales at Marlborough House...
