A Very Good Quality 19th Century Regency Period Mahogany Miniature Bowfronted Chest, Having Extremely Well Figured Top With Crossbanded Decoration, Over Two Short And Three Long Drawers Retaining Original Brass Lions Mask Handles, Raised On Elegant Original Splayed Bracket Feet With Shaped Apron. This fabulous little miniature chest is made using high quality, well figured timbers, which would have been expensive to purchase as raw material. It also boasts lovely little original brass handles and original feet. Almost certainly it was made as a sample piece of furniture originally. There is regular debate over whether miniature furniture was made as an apprentice piece, which is when a craftsmen who was looking for a job at a workshop would create something to showcase their talents. Or whether it was made as a travelling salesmans sample piece, which is when a few items were produced as scale models but a well established workshop as a form of physical catalogue in advance of a travelling salesman’s road trip around the country, for him to use to try and fill his order book with full size counterparts. It is certainly a charming piece of antique miniature furniture...

  • Regency Mahogany Childs Chest of Drawers
    Located in Bedfordshire, GB
A delightful regency period mahogany childs chest, having well figured top over two short and three long drawers with replacement brass knobs, raised on original splayed feet with elegant shaped apron. Childrens furniture is generally found much less often rarer than its full size and scale counterparts for many reasons, the most obvious of which being that there was simply far less of these effective scale models produced. Generally childrens furniture was made to the same specifications, but on a smaller scale, for the children of wealthy families to have and to use. This childs chest is a nice one, good quality and constructed from good, well figured timbers. The brass knobs are later replacements, it would probably have had turned wooden ones originally, however these brass ones work rather well and sit very attractively. From a purely practical perspective it is the perfect size to be used in a whole host of different spaces around the home, but would make an excellent modern day coffee table type item alongside a chair, or sofa. As with all items which we offer for sale this childs chest of drawers...

  • Georgian Yew Wood Miniature Chest of Drawers
    Located in Bedfordshire, GB
A charming and rare 18th century Georgian yew wood miniature chest having four long drawers with original brass knobs raised on original shaped bracket feet. (There is often debate as to whether miniature furniture was made as an apprentice piece, which is when a craftsmen who is looking for a job at a workshop would create something to showcase their talents, or whether it was made as a travelling salesman's sample piece, which is when a few articles were made as scale models in advance of a road trip during which a salesman would travel the country showing prospective clients the kind of items they could produce back at the workshop and take orders from. This particular example doesn't really appear to quite fit either of those briefs however and may well have just been made as an individual, one off piece in a provincial workshop. One of the reasons for this is the construction from solid yewwood which is a rarely used material in items any larger than this as the trunks generally don't grow large enough. The overall quality is  excellent and clearly somebody has spent many, many hours  producing this wonderful piece. A really quite charming piece of antique miniature furniture...

  • Late Regency 19th Century Burr Oak Miniature Chest
    Located in Bedfordshire, GB
A delightful Regency Period burr oak miniature chest having Superbly figured top above two short & three long drawers with Original brass knobs flanked by elegant fluted stiles raised on Original brass ball feet (Often much debate is had as to whether miniature furniture was made as an apprentice piece, which is when a craftsmen who is looking for a job at a workshop would create something to showcase their talents, or whether it was made as a travelling salesmans sample piece, which is when a few articles were made as scale models in advance of a road trip during which the salesman would travel the country showing prospective clients the kind of items they could produce back at the workshop and take orders from. This particular miniature chest of drawers is probably the latter and would have been made as a sample piece. The construction is exquisite and the attention to tiny detail phenomenal in all honesty. They work that would have gone into constructing this with all of its fine details would actually have been more of a challenge and taken a more skilled craftsmen than its full size counterparts would have done. It is also super quality and unusual being constructed from burr oak which has taken on an exceptional rich colour and patina over the years of its life. A really quite charming piece of antique miniature furniture...
