English chest of drawers in blond oak wood

About the Item

The cabinet presented here is a large English chest of drawers that is suitable for various settings. Its two rows of eight drawers each (made of wood and fronted with clear glass) and the four drawers below (made of wood only) lend themselves to a variety of uses: they can in fact hold clothing should the cabinet be placed in a home environment for use in one's own home, or hold documents should it be placed in an office. The material, light oak, is particularly used in England, traceable to the oak forests found there. Confirmation of its origin can be seen in the nameplate affixed to the top, which reads "SHOPFITTINGS (Manchester) LTD." followed by the company's address. In the early 1900s, many pieces of furniture were imported from England, but always in the Victorian style, taking up ancient motifs. They were the so-called "eclectic furniture." The uniqueness of this piece of furniture lies in its being, instead, made in the style of the period in which it was produced: the Deco style.
