About the Item

CHIPPENDALE MAHOGANY CHEST ON CHEST OVER OGEE FEET England c. 1780; Retaining original brasses and feet Noteworthy for it's unusually bold and powerful ogival feet, this form of English chest on chest is generally set over straight bracket feet since the ogival is by it's nature a rather weak foot. The effect is quite striking, the curvy feet raising the chest and giving it a sense of great presence. The fluted columns flank a pair of smaller drawers over three graduated larger drawers in the upper half of the chest; the lower case has identical graduated drawers, all crafted of golden oak secondaries with matched hand dovetailing in all drawers. Thin cockbead molding surrounds each drawer, neatly framing the vibrant and glowing flamed mahogany veneers. Many of the locks are replaced, but the chest somewhat miraculously retains it's original gilt bronze brasses and keyhole escutcheons - these are absolutely gorgeous and elevate the chest quite a bit over the more plain bail pulls utilized on most chests of this form. The crest molding projects over dentil molding, the top of the chest with a pierced fretwork along the front only - this likely would have originally extended along the sides as well but was probably either removed or lost prior to the case having been refinished. The case retains it's original backboards and mostly original feet, though these naturally have seen restoration and patching. For the home with a more classical interior, this is a fine period case piece that makes a powerful statement in any room it becomes a part of. Measurements: 75" H x 21" D x 42 1/4" W Condition Report: Refinished, the left side with some color variation. Extensive restoration throughout, particularly to the drawer blades, many pieces of cockbead molding replaced, extensive cracking and patching to the feet (the feet are original with mostly original blocking, but with obvious repairs), repairs to edges of and bottoms of some drawers, most dust shelves sagging and one in the lower case has been cut out and replaced with some plywood - this was likely cut out from sagging like the other shelves and inhibiting the drawer; this replaced plywood dust shelf is supported with an added block. Original backboards with mostly original rosehead and cut nails, several modern nails supplementing these for strength. Most locks replaced, no key available for any locks; the gilt hardware is entirely original and quite fine. The left side crown molding has an odd cut in it halfway, a similar cut seen in the base molding on the same side (between the front and back foot) - some dentil molding replaced. The pierced fretwork probably originally extended along both sides, though only the front remains. Dings, abrasions, scratches, etc. as expected with a period piece; surface nicely preserved under wax with fine patina throughout; some cloudiness to the shellac in the drawers from handling. Overall this is a very attractive chest with obvious wear and tear, the drawers sturdy and the case absolutely functional for regular use in the home.
