English Georgian Mahogany Antique Mule Chest of Drawers, 19th Century

About the Item

This is a form that is only infrequently found on the market, an interesting and rather useful "side-by-side" lift-top chest over four graduated drawers. Not only being a very practical piece in terms of sheer storage capabilities, the chest is quite refined. Retaining an old surface with a deep worn patina over well preserved color in the smooth mahogany grains that flow almost unbroken across the entire facade, the chest is elevated in particular by the reeded corner columns with thin bands of satinwood inlay. While it is crafted in the Georgian form, it is probably closer to the first quarter of the 19th Century in terms of circulation. The structure is pure and quite symmetrical, showing a clear and methodical approach from the craftsman. Tongue-in-groove joinery is used to join the sides of the frame, the recessed panel set inside grooves in the frame. The faux-drawers along the front of the case are supported from the back with untouched tiny chamfered blocks along the inside. The four graduated drawers have only basic typical repairs (replaced runners, runner losses, a perpendicular bar in one to strengthen the bottom), each retaining it's original brass bail pulls. The back shows the clean tenon-mortise construction with tiny wooden pins locking the corners together, as well as retaining several original rosehead nails. This is an excellent chest of drawers for anyone passionate about English antique furniture, being a very striking piece with it's ogee bracket feet, inlaid inverted teardrop escutcheons and corner columns. It is a wonderful statement piece for any classical or period home. Measurements: 67 3/8" W x 21 1/2" D x 41 1/4" H Condition Report: Surface is early but not original, a well developed patina throughout; burns and discolorations to the top, water drip marks along right side of front and in some areas along the sides, along with other use indicators: dings, abrasions, and non-noteworthy blemishes. The facings of both back feet are missing the lower 1-2.5". Case retains it's original brasses, original feet and original hinges - some structure replacements, note the use of an old drawer face as a cross brace on the underside and other interior part replacements. Most blocking original. Drawers with loss to the applied runners, one drawer with a brace added perpendicular to the face. Some pieces of replaced molding around the top.
