About the Item

This exceptional pair of Louis XV–Louis XVI Transition commodes represents the emergence of French Classicism in the late 18th century. Created in one of the leading Parisian ébénisterie workshops around 1765–1775, these pieces combine the graceful elegance of the Louis XV period with the newly established Classical vocabulary that would come to define the reign of Louis XVI. At approximately 250 years old, they exemplify the highest craftsmanship of French furniture making of the 18th century. The slightly convex front (en arbalète) and the refined, balanced proportions of the carcass create an elegant architectural presence. The beautifully executed marquetry features a lively trellis pattern (treillis) in satinwood and amaranth on a dark rosewood ground, demonstrating exceptional precision and technical finesse characteristic of the finest Parisian work of the period. The fire-gilded bronze mounts (bronzes dorés au mercure) are of outstanding quality. Fluted corner pilasters and finely chiselled acanthus ornaments accentuate the edges and the apron, enhancing the Classical character and the formal dignity of the pieces. Each commode is crowned with a profiled slab of rare, warm-toned Brèche d’Alep marble, adding both visual richness and historical authenticity. These commodes stand as outstanding examples of French Classicism, distinct from the later 19th-century revivals. Their craftsmanship, materials and stylistic purity place them among the most desirable works of late-18th-century Parisian furniture. Details: • Period: Louis XV–Louis XVI Transition (c. 1765–1775) • Style: French Classicism (18th century) • Age: Approx. 250 years • Materials: Rosewood (palisander), satinwood, amaranth marquetry, fire-gilded bronze, Brèche d’Alep marble • Condition: Excellent, restored and presentation-ready • Provenance: From a leading Parisian workshop of the 18th century
