About the Item

A handsome Federal mahogany chest-on-chest, the carvings attributed to Samuel F. McIntire, Salem, Massachusetts, circa 1790. This impressive chest-on-chest has an applied crest with molded broken arched scrolls terminating with finely carved rosettes. These distinctive carvings are a form found on a number of other Salem pieces from the cabinet shop of Samuel Field McIntire (1757-1811). These carvings are described and illustrated in the recent volume “Samuel McIntire: Carving an American Style” and attached here. The floral form represents an acanthus flower which has an open center with multiple stamen which retain traces of original gilding. The rosettes frame a central plinth set with a turned vase-form finial which also retains traces of gilding on the lower portion. The face of this arch or tympanum has ribbon grained mahogany and a crotch grained central frieze with a dentil molded edge above a veneered pediment. This cornice transitions with an applied block molding to an upper case with a pair of short drawers above four graduated drawers. The upper case transitions with a molded edge to the lower section which also has four graduated drawers. Each of the drawers has an applied cock-bead molding and is mounted with attractive original pressed oval brasses. The four full size drawers have steel locks and brass keyhole surrounds. The chest has a molded base and rests on nicely shaped ogee bracket with shaped returns. The back of one drawer is signed with the name of the original owner William Hodges.

Condition:
The chest is excellent condition with minor typical repairs. The brass pull on the left side of the bottom drawer is a period replacement. The feet are original with minor repairs and patches. The dentil molding is restored.
