About the Item

Chest of drawers attributed to the workshop of Matthijs Horrix, circa 1770-1780 Dimensions: 82 cm high, 115 cm wide, and 52 cm deep. Oak core veneered with rosewood and palm wood marquetry, topped with a white Carrara marble slab, gilded bronze fittings. Provenance: Private collection, Wallonia, Belgium This chest of drawers was almost certainly made in the workshop of Matthijs Horrix in The Hague. Horrix, originally from Germany, settled in The Hague in the 1760s, where he specialized in making furniture in the French style. His workshop was probably the most important in the third quarter of the 18th century in the court city and was well known far beyond the city limits. A large number of pieces of furniture have been preserved that can be attributed to this workshop, including several in royal possession, which are located in the Huis ten Bosch Palace. It is mainly chests of drawers that can be attributed to Horrix; only a few cabinets have survived. The Horrix workshop remained active until the end of the 19th century and grew during the 19th century into one of the most important furniture manufacturers in the country. This chest of drawers is one from a series made between 1770 and 1780 in the so-called transition style, the transition from Louis XV to Louis XVI. The shape and decoration of this chest of drawers already have the straight lines of the Louis XVI style, while the legs and bottom rails still show the flowing lines of the Louis XV style. The fittings on this chest are found in preserved catalogs of English foundries from the 18th century. What is special about this chest is that the doors are located on both sides, the front has false doors. On the left side, behind the door, there are 4 drawers, and on the right side, 3 shelves. The doors on the sides were probably placed there so that the servants did not have to bend over in front of the lord and lady of the house. There are still a number of Horrix chests built in this way; one has been on the market in the past, another is located at Twickel Castle, and a Louis XVI version is at Amerongen Castle. Another related chest, with the same fittings and veneered wood types, was sold by the Stodel company at the antique fair in Delft in the 1950s and depicted in the catalog.
