Fine French 19th Century Louis XVI Style Marquetry & Gilt-Bronze Mounted Commode
About the Item
A fine and large French late 19th century Louis XVI style mahogany, kingwood bandings and fruitwood marquetry armorial commode with Sycamore Marquetry and gilt bronze mounts, After a Model of The Commode Commandée Pour La Chambre de Louis XVI à Versailles (d. 1774) by Jean-Henri Riesener (French, 1734-1806). The two-drawer and two-side door "D" shaped commode fitted with a white and mottled grey marble top resting on the base with four armorial bronze figures emblematic of courage, force, Prudence and Tempérence. The centre marquetry panel with a floral still life and vase design flanked on each side by cherubs emblematic of Bienfaisance and Justice, below a sunburst mask ormolu mount; the lower apron cantered with a cobalt-blue sphere with fleur de liz applications surmounted by two floral cornucopias. The rounded sides each fitted with a cupboard door. The bronze mounts bear the casting stamp "L. Kahn" to the reverse, from the leading French 19th century bronzer Léon Kahn who is known for his high quality casting and chasing of French furniture. Kahn's furniture was mainly created from examples of French period works by Master ébénistes and "ébénistes du roi" like Jean-Henri Riesener (1734-1806) and Guillaume Benneman (1750-1811), Paris, circa 1890.
Léon Kahn was a Parisian bronzier supplying finely chased ormolu and gilt bronze castings after models of some of the great 18th century ébénistes like Jean Henri Riesener, Guillaume Benneman and Pierre-Philippe Thomire to renown local cabinet makers working in Paris during the last quarter of the 19th century and early 20th century. Many of Kahn's pieces bear the stamp "L.Kahn" on the underside. Kahn's furnishings have been offered at international auction houses and have been highly regarded by antique dealers, collectors and auction experts alike.

19th Century Louis XVI Style Marquetry Commode in the Manner of Riesener
By Jean-Henri Riesener
Located in London, GB
A very fine Louis XVI style gilt-bronze mounted marquetry commode
After the design by Jean-Henri Riesener (1734-1806)
After a model by Jean-Henri Riesener, supplied to Princess Adélaïde for Versailles. Constructed from amaranth with veneered tulipwood "en semelle" and dressed with a profusion of finely cast & hand-chased ormolu mounts, with a Sarrancolin marble platform, atop a breakfront frieze, set with three drawers, over a unified central panel divided in two drawers depicting a 'bois de bout' marquetry floral still life within a gilt-bronze frame, flanked by panels of quarter-cut tulipwood with ormolu handles suspended from lover's knot bows, with conforming matched panels to the concave sides. The apron is mounted with a finely cast central scroll, and the canted corners dressed with cascading ormolu foliate mounts terminating in lion's paw feet.
French, circa 1910
Madame Adélaïde's commode
The design for this commode was one of the earliest royal commissions awarded to Jean-Henri Riesener (1734-1806), the master craftsman who was later appointed cabinetmaker to Louis XVI and his court in 1774. The commode, with its architectural features, extensive ormolu mounts and immaculate marquetry work, was ordered in 1776 and delivered that same year for Madame Adélaïde (1732-1800), the daughter of king Louis XV and Marie Leszczynska. The commode was later moved to château de Bellevue when it was given to her by king Louis XVI.
The famous commode was later part of the Earl of Carnarvon's collection, who also bought furniture made for Napoleon. Carnarvon's wife, Lady Elmina Wombwell, was the child of Alfred de Rotschild, which may explain the post-revolutionary history of the royal commode. In 2018, the Riesener commode was bought for the nation for the sum of 3.5m€ and returned to Versailles.
